Papua New Guinea

It was probably extremely fortunate for all coffee lovers that coffee growing came late to Papua New Guinea, a country that share island with Indonesia east region Irian Jaya (now called as Papua). Otherwise, the disastrous plague of hemileia vastatrix(leaf rust) that wiped out arabica plantations throughout South East Asia and Oceania in the late 1800s, would have ensured that today Papua New Guinea would be growing mostly robusta, like so many other countries who replanted with resistant species at the cost of good flavor.

Much of New Guinea's arabica is grown, washed and further processed in varying degrees by natives rural, and sometimes isolated, villages located in the high altitude mountainous region which occupies so much of Papua New Guinea's landmass. These coffee are an extremely important source of revenue for Papua New Guinea, providing a living for hundreds of thousands of people, and the government provides encouragement and support.

The gourmet quality coffee Papua New Guinea coffee was cultivated from Blue Mountainvariety stock, the results make the New Papua Guinea washed arabica rather different from other coffees from this part of the world.  Although have good body and sweetness, as do many Indonesians, they also have a higher acidity closer in style to Central Americans. Probably aging the beans would balance the acidity of the coffee. The top AA grade is scarce, while the about 60 percent of beans make up of ordinary decent Y grade. Quality names to look out for include Arona, Okapa, and Sigri.  For coffee lovers, is worth it to have search for this AA grade from Papua New Guinea.  You should try them, specially the Quality names coffee above.
